Words from my brother- China and my niece

I’m writing this from the Shanghai airport which means my China trip is over. I hate that. But I'm glad to be coming home. I'll keep praying that God brings "Mercy" into our home. But if not, I will always cherish the memories of playing with her and hearing her call me "papa"...even if only for that moment in time. She will bring such happiness to her family; I just pray it will be my family. Most importantly I will never forget these precious orphan children and what they taught me:

* Love changes lives.
* We all want to be loved by our papa.
* Nothing feels as safe as being held.
* If you can’t get someone to listen to you, bite them (I have a huge bruise to prove this truth)
* Loving someone doesn't mean they'll love you back.
* Color means nothing when seen through the eyes of love.
* Prayer changes lives.
* Kids will overcome and adapt to whatever special needs they might have.
* We all have special needs.
* We were all orphans once.
* To belong and to have a family is the best thing in the world.
* A nanny is a walking, breathing saint!
* People who follow God's calling can change the world.
* Buying something will now always be measured in how many surgeries it could have purchased.
* Christ is the great equalizer when you don't speak the same language.
* God truly has a special place in his heart for the orphan.
* A smile means the same thing in Chinese as it does in English.
* No matter how amazing the opportunity, it will never be as good as if my family was here to enjoy it with me.
* Jesus is the father to the fatherless.
* The love for a child that grows in your heart is just as powerful as when that child comes from you.
* You can't make someone love you but you can always love someone.
* Hearing the word "papa" can make your day.
Anyway, these are just some thoughts from a foreign land that I have come to love.

(my brother Greg)
I love you and soooo proud of your heart for orphans!!

I met Roger when he was 12 years old!! My mom was his substitute teacher and came home one day and told me she met the cuteeesst boy and I should meet him. When I asked her what grade, she told me he was in 7th. AWWWW...I was a freshman in High School. Noooo way would I stoop so low to check out a jr high boy!! Well, fast forward 2 years & I made my move on a cute new freshman!!! For those of you who remember what I looked like in High School...this move was very brave of me. Miracles do happen and I snabbed the cutest, onriest, cockiest (he was the star b-ball & football player:) adorable boyfriend!!! We dated for a few years & then we parted ways (remember I'm older & was off for college)

2nd miracle... we meet again 6 years later!!!!!!!!!!! He was graduating from college and playing basketball for Cal Baptist. I took one look & fell madly in love again. We dated for a year and married a year later... 1992!! I am blessed like crazy to be married 17 years to my best friend and the LOVE of my life!!

Girls just LOVE TO GAB... adorable video 4 my bloggy girlfriends!!

My dad shared this ADORABLE video of a sweet baby already proving how much girls LOVE to talk!!!! It's a funny example of how little girls use a lot of words right from the beginning.... I think it's a built in "special program" just for us!!! xoxo

Pray for my niece "Grace" in China... we need mighty miracles!!!

We received news last night that my niece-to-be "Grace" needs our fervent prayers!!!!! My brother & sis are adopting a precious girl from China and found out that she is being moved back to her original orphanage. She has special needs and has received incredible love and protection and nurture at her current location. God removed her from a difficult situation and placed her in an outstanding facility. It's the only place she knows and has thrived in every way. She receives therapy daily and has had several operations under their loving care.

Prayer Request: That "Grace" will not go back to her original orphanage. It has the potential of being devastating to everyone involved in her life!! This change could alter her adoption from moving forward, as well as not getting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual guidance and love that surrounds her now.

Please pray for mighty miracles!!!
On a personal note, Roger and I started off in the China Program 2 yrs ago with our adoption agency. We dreamed that God has a very precious baby girl waiting for us in China. We had no idea that God would redirect us to Ethiopia where our daughter was INDEED waiting for us. We are so blessed that God would now bring our niece from China!!!!!!!! God is so faithful!!

Thank you for praying. We will keep you updated!!

I'm on a Wild Goose Chase... Another contest & prize!!!

My hubby encouraged me this weekend to read the book... Wild Goose Chase-Mark Batterson!! It's one of the BEST books I've ever read. It's inspired me and encouraged me and convicted me!! I've been so very blessed living near my family for 42 years and have grown deep roots for 16 years raising our kids in a small town in the Ozarks. I've dreamed about simple things...waking up everyday and doing my best as a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister and a friend. Life has been comfortable and routine. I'm not saying my life has been easy.... Believe me, I've been through so many crazy ups & downs I get a little dizzy:)

The book grabbed me from page one!!! "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." (Helen Keller) Living dangerously has not been my passion or focus. OK, I'm sitting here with my 4 front teeth still knocked out...its a crazy life, but its my life and I try not to rock the boat toooo hard and I really like safety.

Page 6 got my attention..
"Every once in a while, I have random thoughts that seem to come out of nowhere (me too) Here's a thought that fired across my synapses not long ago: Do angels yawn? I seriously wonder if angels have the capacity to get bored? More important, I wonder if some of us are living such safe lives that not only are we bored, but so are our guardian angels. If they could, would our guardian angels coax us out of our "cage" and beg us to give them something dangerous to do? Since when did it become safe to follow Christ? Maybe its time to come out of the cage and live dangerously for the cause of Christ!!!!"

Wild Goose Chase theme: God-ordained passion
I have a few very specific passions in my life.... marriage, family, children, Africa, orphans and adoption!!! I'm learning that when God puts a "passion" in your heart, that God-ordained passion becomes my responsibility!! I can be irresponsibly responsible or responsibly irresponsible!! (ahhhh you'll have to read the book to follow that:)

"Soooo what makes you cry? What makes you pound your fist on the table? What makes you smile? If you want to discover your God-ordained passions, then you need to identify what makes you sad, mad, or glad. And somewhere in the sadness, madness or gladness you will find the WILD GOOSE CHASE waiting for you!!!"

I'm on the hunt. I'm asking the Lord to specifically show me how He wants to use me...all of me from head to toe. I want to pursue the God-ordained passions in my life. I can't wait to see what adventure He has for my life.

You know I love contests and I love prizes!!! I want to hear YOUR God-ordained passion. What gives you Wild Goose bumps? At the end of the week, I'll draw a name & the winner gets the book I'm going crazzzzyyy over...
Wild Goose Chase!!
It's a short week and kids are getting out of school for the summer,
so I will draw the winning name on Sunday morning.

A Few Zoie Firsts in May

Zoie is really growing!! She's 16 months old & bursting out of her 24 mo clothes!! We finally nipped the all over body bumps (thanks YG aunties) She has mastered her 1st song "this little light of mine" that Gramma taught her, but all she sings is DIS DIS over & over all day long. She points her little chubby finger in the air & that is my cue to sing!! I've made up many versions now... the rock&roll, jazz, hip hop, opera, and of course the big band w/ toy piano:) She is talking up a storm and so curious about the big world around her. She LOVES being outside. Unfortunately I found her 1st tick, too. Zoie adores her "bubub" and "sissy"
A few more firsts...
*1st bug snack (beetle no less)
*1st 17 stair quest (ooops that was a secret escape)

Winning Mom Story:))

Sarah's Story -her blog, too:)
ok, here's my "mom story". i've learned that being a mommy means throwing your pride and modesty out the window. here's a perfect example of why: i was in the grocery store one day and grace was about 2. by the time we were in a very long line to check out she had had about enough of it. i left her out of the cart (lesson learned) and she was hanging on my legs and using me as a jungle gym. in one quick second she fell...and took my gym pants with her...i mean my pants were on the floor...where everyone could see my pink panties and white legs. embarrasing. after i got over the embarrasment i just laughed my head off. that's what being a mom is all about, putting yourself out there for all to see! we know our children repeat everything we say (even the bad stuff) and during pregnancy our modesty has to fly out the window. but hey, we're more human now. flaws out there for everyone to see. and life is better this way. i wouldn't change me life with my children for anything, even if they do embarrass me!!!

Simply Sunday... and the WINNER is ???

We had so much fun reading all the stories...they were each special in their own way!! Your stories were hilarious and encouraging and real!!! Being a mom is the BEST job in the world:) The kids drew names & the winning pick is...........
Your special prize (& my favorite authors) The Redemption Series by Karen Kingsbury (pic) and my dad, Gary Smalley!!! Karen adopted 3 beautiful boys from Haiti. Sarah, I just need your email & You can choose from CD or books:) whooooohooooo

Awesome Mom Story.... 1 more day!!!

Bloggy Moms.... 1 more day to go!!! :)
Here's a great story from my good friend Jaime D!!! Enjoy & be encouraged!!

My boys are both home today (John Peter is sick)…and were playing, packing up their Lighting McQueen suitcases to go on an adventure. They were packing hurriedly, even shoving the just-folded clothes into their luggage which of course, drove me crazy. Fast forward through the mom-gets-angry part to the part where they arrive at their journey. I overhear one say, “Wow! We’re finally here…in Ethiopia, Africa!” My ears perk up. I listen while they pretend to talk to their sister, telling her “We are proud of you, Jane-Grace for waiting so patiently.” My tears start to flow, thinking of how impatient I feel, how sad and how angry I am that we failed court Monday, and that she is not coming home in May. They continue to play, handing her a Dunham pom-pom, books that John Peter wrote for school (where Tom & Jerry go to a haunted house and pray to God when they are scared. Yes I realize how funny this is.), and their favorite George and Martha book. I go into the laundry room to collect myself…ironic, mainly because the laundry room is so chaotic that it is the last place someone should go to clear their head. . I hear Christopher say, “I think I will sing her a lullaby.” (Read my last post.) Then he changes his mind saying, “oh. She doesn’t need one.” I come out from the laundry room and argue with him that she does, in fact, need a lullaby. I glance at the clock reading 12.45…realizing it is almost 9 pm in Addis and she is probably in bed. My heart is sad…Christopher again says, “Mom, she does NOT need a lullaby.” It strikes me not as him being obstinate (at it normally would from my son, so much like me), but instantly I think, “isn’t there a verse about God singing over us”? I found it in Zephaniah 3.17:

Do not fear;
Zion, let not your hands be weak.

17 The LORD your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”
18 “ I will gather those who sorrow over the appointed assembly,
Who are among you,
To whom its reproach is a burden.
19 Behold, at that time
I will deal with all who afflict you;
I will save the lame,
And gather those who were driven out;
I will appoint them for praise and fame
In every land where they were put to shame.
20 At that time I will bring you back,
Even at the time I gather you;
For I will give you fame and praise
Among all the peoples of the earth,
When I return your captives before your eyes,”
Says the LORD.

Sometimes being a mom isn’t what you teach your children. It isn’t what you say. It is allowing the powerful word of God to speak to you…sometimes thru your children. Being a Mom is learning to have faith like a child. Faith to pack a suitcase before the tickets have been booked. Faith to grab a pom-pom to cheer for the victory before the whistle blows. Faith to know when to sing, and faith to know when the song has already been sung. Sometimes Mary sang a song…and sometimes she shut her mouth and pondered these things in her heart.

Moms you rock!! Keep your stories coming...2 more days to enter the JFF contest! Here's a little inspiration (to make you smile)

I found this cute story...
Everyday after work, I pick my daughter up and carry her with me to cheerleading practice
(I am a coach). Well a few weeks ago , taking the same route, we passed a dead skunk. She said, "awwww mommy is he dead" I replied "yes he is" She said "poor skunk." The next day we came by the same spot and she said, "awwww mommy its still there." I said "yes he is, but he is okay." She was so sad cause he was still laying in the street. A few weeks passed and we did not come that way. Well yesterday we came that way and she yelled "MOMMY HE'S GONE", I said who, She said the skunk in an excited voice. I said yes he's gone. She said "he's gone to heaven right?" I said yes he is. Then she paused and said. "OH NO!!" I said what's the matter. She said, "I sure hope Jesus don't smell that old funky thing." I was laughing so hard that I had to pull the car over to catch my breath.

Zoie's Story... you CAN make a difference today in a child's life!!

We met Zoie Senait for the first time on July 7, 2008 in Addis Ababa at the AWAA Transitional Home. We had been told by many staff and families that had traveled to Ethiopia before us that our daughter was VERY tiny. Nothing could have prepared our hearts for what we would see.

Our precious daughter was indeed tiny...
at 6 months old, she only weighed 8 pounds. All I could say when they placed her in my arms was...
she's so tiny. Her head and legs and arms and tiny feet were the size of a newborn infant. I had brought a beautiful flower head band to give her, but it looked massive on her tiny head.

She had no strength or energy due to her health issues. We were so happy that day and in love with our sweet girl, but we knew we were facing dire circumstances. She had pneumonia, dehydration, a severe upper respiratory infection and fever. Her tummy was swollen, due to malnourishment, her tiny chest was sunken and her breathing fast and labored, even her head veins were bulging
All she could do was stare at us with her enormous beautiful eyes. She needed our help!! Our second night at the hotel with Zoie, we knew we were in trouble. She stopped breathing several times and in our panic and fear we made the difficult decision to take her to the hospital. The Hilton Hotel staff were incredible and they helped pile our family in a van in the middle of the night. The head nurse from the Transitional Home (our angel!) met up with us and we searched the night for a hospital and doctor who would help our tiny girl. We drove around the city for hours, but could not find any help and in desperation prayed to God for His protection. At 6AM, we finally made a connection with beautiful Dr. Sophie and she met us at her clinic. It was one of the most painful, challenging, uncertain nights of our journey. We started to unravel and doubt and fear what was going to happen next. Zoie Senait was fighting for her life!

We started feeding Zoie the same formula Tom Davis is donating to the AWAA TH. She ravishingly ate every 2 hours and we watched a miracle happen before our eyes. Within 24 hrs we could literally see our daughter healing. We started healing. We believed and trusted and rejoiced and celebrated our tiny miracle!

Zoie had been in the best care and showered with love at the Transitional Home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The staff and nannies are our heroes!! However,they are desperate to have baby formula that will help the children waiting for their families heal and grow and thrive. At the time, the staff did the very BEST they could with the
nutritional resources they had. When we heard they came close many times to running out of formula, it broke our hearts.

Donating $30 for life-saving formula for babies in Ethiopia will make a huge difference in ways you may never understand. This formula would have made a major impact on our daughter's health. It's something simple we can all do, but it's changing the world one baby at a time. Simply love!!

A note from Tom:

URGENT NEED: Forumla Needed for Malnourished Babies in Ethiopia!! Famine and poverty are increasing the rates of malnourished infant babies in Ethiopia. Children's HopeChest has worked with the America World Adoption Agency (AWAA) on projects in Ethiopia and Russia over the past five years. This request came to us from their transition home where they are receiving severely malnourished babies into their care. This month, in honor of mother's day, I want to raise $12,500 to provide specialized baby formula to this transition home for these malnourished babies. (Please put "Ethiopia Formula" in the note section of the donate page.)

To kick this off, a friend of Children's HopeChest has offered a matching gift for the first $500 we receive toward this project.

Braner Family....We'll Miss You!!

Simply Sunday

Long ago, even before he made the world, God chose us to be his very own, through what Christ would do for us; he decided then to make us holy in his eyes, without a single fault- we who stand before him covered with his love. His unchanging plan has always been to ADOPT us into his own family by sending Jesus Christ to die for us. And he did this because he wanted to!

Ethiopia Families.... A MUST READ book that will inspire you!!!

A dear friend gave me this book this week and I couldn't put it down. Go Run Buy it today!!! I added it on my "Adoption Boutique" at the bottom of the blog. It's a true-life story of a family and our beloved Addis Ababa, Ethiopia!! It will educate you, inspire you, encourage you, BLESS you!!

Sheltered By the King
, by
Marta Gabre-Tsadick
Here's a taste:

Marta...born in poverty, she rose to favor with the Emperor of Ethiopia, Hailie Selassie, becoming the nation's first woman senator...Marta fought to save her country...and she lost. It is the very personal, tender, and dramatic story of a family whose world collapsed- a family marked for death. The protecting hand of their emperor was gone, the borders were closed, and a child was desperately ill, somewhere, maybe over the next hill, well-armed soldiers were hunting them.

You will learn with Marta, to trust in God alone when the security of family, home, job, and government has vanished * to be faithful in small things, so God can raise you to greater things * to stand fast in the face of evil, violence and corruption-to "do what you can and leave the outcome to God" * to discover your untapped strengths and resources!!
To learn more about Project Mercy...check out their website!!
A note from new friend Gabby...
Marta and Deme are both in their 70's I think. They have a house in Addis where they do alot of their business end of things, but they spend quite a bit of time in Yetebon/Butijira (about 2-2.5 hrs. south of Addis) where Project Mercy is actually located, checking up on things, seeing their kids, etc. They have about 50 orphans living on their compound now and all consider Marta and Deme to be mom and dad, so it's was always fun watching the kids get all dressed up and excited whenever they came down to visit.
